LaMelo Ball fined $155,000 for 'offensive and derogatory comment' after NBA match

Charlotte Hornets coach Charles Lee has said actor guard LaMelo Ball is "very apologetic" for making what the NBA called "an offensive and derogatory comment" as it fined him $US100,000 ($155,000), the maximum allowed by league rule.

Ball made the comment on Saturday, local day, shortly after the Hornets defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 115-114.

Sideline reporter Shannon Spake asked Ball about the team's defensive strategy against Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo on the game's final play, and Ball used an anti-gay slur while delivering his answer.

The league penalised the 23-year-old Ball on Sunday before the Hornets played in Cleveland.

Lee opened his pre-game media session by addressing the situation and said he had spoken to Ball about his behaviour.

"As an organisation that is obviously not something we condone," Lee said.

"Our standards and what is required of our players in the environment we create is really important to us.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Hornets star guard LaMelo Ball said Sunday night that he didn't signify to offend anyone with a comment the NBA said was "offensive and derogatory" while slapping him with a $100,000 fine.

The league came down firm on Ball, levying the maximum satisfactory possible on the 23-year-old.

After the Hornets lost 128-114 to the unbeaten Cavaliers, Ball made his first comments since the fine was assessed.

"Before we acquire started, I just want to speak to the comment yesterday," he told reporters. "I really didn't mean anything (by it) and don't want to offend anybody. I've got love for everybody, and I don't discriminate."

Ball scored 31 points on 11-of-29 shooting and had 12 assists against the Cavs.
