A Facebook post is manipulating the public that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was photographed at a pride pride in 1999. Our review has shown that such a claim is not true.
A photo of several people posing at a gay parade accompanies the post. In the photo, there is a person with Zelensky’s face. Ukraine Distances Itself from Russia in Progressing LGBTQ+ Equality
“The war in Ukraine, it’s not just a war between Russia and Ukraine. It’s a war between totalitarianism and democracy. It’s a war between homophobia and LGBT rights. It’s a war between death and life.” Borys, a twenty-seven-year-old Ukrainian soldier, delivered this stark assessment to Openly News.
Homophobia has remained common in the post-Soviet space. It is a commonplace to say that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a strife between authoritarianism and the rights of free people to govern themselves. In Ukraine, the fact that many LGBTQ+ persons have taken up arms and joined the military and supported the war in other ways is contributing to rapidly altering attitudes.
This stands in marked contrast to the state of affairs in Russia, where the Kremlin focuses precisely on further isolating and attacking LGBTQ+ people in Russia and in the occupied regions of Ukraine. This serves Russia’s geopolitical interests and, more narrowly, the intere
Fact Check: Did Zelensky Appear a 1999 Pride Parade in New York?
A photo has been deceptively edited.
A photographcirculating online purports to show Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his former adviser Oleksiy Arestovych at a New York pride parade. The image has been digitally altered. Neither man appears in the original image.
The image shows two men heavily made up and in skimpy outfits below a caption that reads “New York 1999.” Arrows point to two men identified as Zelensky and Arestovych, but their faces were digitally superimposed onto the photo. The original image, which was taken at a New York gay pride parade on June 25, 2006, shows neither of the men is the Ukrainian president or his onetime adviser. Otherphotos from the same collection show the same men in different poses and locations.
