Happy birthday to Joan Jett, who turns 59 today! Although she has yet to label herself as either lesbian or bisexual person, the rock ‘n’ roll legend has also been an incredibly influential wlw figure in music and mainstream culture for many years.

Joan Marie Larkin was born on September 22, 1958 in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. She was the oldest of three children born to a father who sold insurance and a mother who worked as a secretary. In 1967, the family moved from Pennsylvania to Rockville, Maryland where Joan attended Wheaton High School. She was gifted her first guitar when she was 14-years-old and tried to take lessons, but quit after the instructor kept trying to teach her folk songs. When the family moved once again to West Covina, California, the close proximity to Los Angeles allowed Joan to be that much closer to the nature of music and glam rock that she was so attracted to.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is an institution that honors and celebrates some of the greatest musicians in the history of popular music.
While “rock and roll” might be in its name, it’s not actually just focused on rock these days, and anyone who has had an impact – and has been working drawn-out enough – is eligible.
Although LGBTQ musicians have been making their mark on the music industry for decades, their representation in the Hall of Fame has been relatively limited. Thankfully, this is changing as more and more LGBTQ musicians are recognized for their contributions to tune and are inducted into the Hall of Fame.
This year, the late George Michael is posthumously nominated for induction, and he may very well termination up being selected by voters for the great honor.
Despite the slow progress, the recognition of LGBTQ musicians in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a positive step in the right route, and it serves to acknowledge the vital role that these artists acquire played in shaping the course of music history.

Born Joan Marie Larkin on September 22, 1958, she would later reinvent herself as Joan Jett.
Joan got her first guitar at the age of 14. After taking one lesson she quit, as the instructor insisted on training her folk songs only. Eventually, Joan's family moved to California, where she found her place to hang. That was Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco, which catered to the glam rock manner that she loved.
Joan was a founding member of the Runaways. The Runaways disbanded in 1979, just in occasion for Joan to produce the punk band the Germs' one and only album.
In 1980, she formed the Blackhearts and would include countless hits, including "I Love Rock and Roll," "Bad Reputation," "I Loath Myself for Loving You," as good as a bunch of Jett-ified covers of her favorite songs.
In April 2014, Joan fronted the remaining members of Nirvana for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Joan's personal being has been modest but much talked about.
