Writer Ian Halperin, who published the unofficial biography Unmasked: The Final Years of Michael Jackson in 2009, said "virtually everyone" in Jackson's circle knew he was secretly gay.

In 1979 Tatum O'Neal had persuaded Michael to move to an after party with her and a several friends at the guest house of Rod Stewart's Beverly Hills Home.
