How One Jeopardy! Contestant’s Experience Lead to an Unforgettable Viral Moment
January 15, 2015 was poised to be magical. It was the daytime of the Oscar nominations, a.k.a. The Real Christmas. My pals Chris, Tony, Gus, and I woke at 5:30 for the large announcement and huddled in our jammies like Clement Moore characters. As nominations were read, we screamed for the goodies that Academy Santa had brought us. “A surprise nomination for Marion Cotillard! You shouldn’t have, Santa!” I hollered. A spiritual morning.
That afternoon I was coasting on Cotillard zealotry when I noticed a missed call from Culver City. Culver City! I saw Ken Jennings deliver an interview once where he mentioned that when Jeopardy! producers phone him, it’s from a Culver City number. I knew this was my time.
“Congratulations!” a producer said on the other line. “You’re going to be a contestant on Jeopardy!”
I grinned, I cackled. I texted my brother Mark with “I’M OFF TO TREBEKISTAN, MORTAL.”
Jeopardy! has been my favorite TV show for as long as I can recall. It rewards the three things I care about: reflexes, knowledge, and competitiveness. I call it “Bad Girls Club” for nerds. Just showo
Dr. Oz has been hosting Jeopardy!, and people have sturdy feelings. After the sad death of Alex Trebek, former contestants have been wandering in the knowledge wilderness. Dr. Oz as host was the ultimate insult. More than 600 of them signed a letter of protest to the show’s producers. They said:
“Dr. Oz stands in opposition to everything that Jeopardy! stands for. Jeopardy! is a reveal that values proof and knowledge. Throughout his nearly two decades on television he has used his authority as a doctor to push harmful ideas onto the American public, in stark contrast with his oath to first do no damage. These ideas involve promoting supplements that do nothing, legitimizing gay conversion therapy (which is banned in California, as well as 19 other states), deadly “cures” for autism, and, most recently, the use of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19.”
Executive producer Mike Richards, who himself took a couple of weeks at the Jeopardy! guest-hosting podium, responded by saying, basically, “we value your opinion. Now, here’s Dr. Oz.”
But the protests contain continued. In a column last week in Variety, former Jeopardy! contestant

His professional-yet-warmhearted manner made him a beloved personality, who'd get so familiar on our TV screens after more than 35 years that it almost felt like we knew him. When the cameras were rolling, Trebek made it seem like he could read off clues and announce Daily Doubles in his sleep—but in March 2019, he revealed that he'd been living with a stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis offscreen. On November 8, 2020, Trebek died at age 80.
The day after Trebek's passing, Jeopardy! executive producer Mike Richards told the Today Show's Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb that he'd gotten to spend his last day with the love of his experience, wife Jean Trebek. "He had a swing in his backyard he loved, he actually rebuilt it earlier this year," Richards said, adding that Trebek was notoriously handy.
"Even in his book, he described that he wanted his final day to be sitting on the swing next to his wife Jean, kind of watching the horizon," Richards continued. "And he got to
