I’ve been a fan of Frasier since it was on the air, but it’s only recently that I’ve felt the urge to watch it again. I’m not sure exactly what drew me to this series in particular, but I suppose it stems from two things: one, the fact that a good friend of mine has mentioned it quite a lot of recently and two, my desire to watch an old-fashioned sitcom, one that doesn’t try to act something new or creative with the genre but instead just dishes up what you want. Very adv during this most recent rewatch, I started to notice something very curious, indeed. Namely, it really leapt out at me how queer this series was, even if on the surface it appears to be a heterosexual sitcom like so many others.
Obviously, some of this has to perform with the cast. Though it wouldn’t be publicly known for quite some time, David Hyde Pierce is gay (he publicly came out in the early 2000s), and at least two other members of the cast are as well: Dan Butler (who played Bulldog, the resident sports show at KACL) and Edward Hibbert (who played Gil, the fussy and campy restaurant critic at the station). Of course, all three are supposedly “straight” within the universe of
"David Hyde Pierce (a Freedom to Marry Voice for Equality), best recognizable as Dr. Niles Crane on 'Frasier' and current luminary of the revival of 'La Bete' on Broadway, recently sat down with Jordan Roth (also a VFE), president of Jujamcyn Theaters, at the 92nd Street Y in New York Metropolis to discuss his career, coming out of the closet, marriage equality and why there's nothing crueler than syndicated television.
"In the most intimate portion of the discussion, Pierce opened up about being gay and why he finally decided to make his relationship with longtime partner Brian Hargrove public in 2007.
"'It was very important to me never to fictional, never to hide,' Pierce said. 'In 1985, my significant other Brian and I were new in the business and were not pleasant letting people comprehend that we were gay. We had separate apartments. We went about our business.'
"'We met this delightful married couple down in the grocery store below the apartment building where we all stayed. A month later, we finally had the courage to come out and let them comprehend that in evidence we were a couple. They said, 'We knew when we saw you shopping.'
"Pierce admits he felt bullied into coming out and res

Alton Brown was in Down with Love?
No way. If Alton Brown and Ewan MacGregor ever shared screen hour, I’d die of lust.

I think the “Frugal Gourmet” comment is in reference to the accusations of sexual maltreatment of young men that dogged Jeff Smith until his death in 2004.
And yeah- Mahoney is out, Hyde-Pierce has certainly not kept his orientation a classified from observers, and Bulldog is WAY out.

DHP has never been closeted, he just didn’t talk to the issue. In truth, I always liked what he said (googlable on several sites):
“My life is an open manual. I just don’t intend to read it to anybody.”
He was a friend of Maureen Reagan and attended her funeral (which was broadcast) and held hands with his partner on camera.

It is all to well known a fact that I am an avid fan of the 1990s NBC sitcom ‘Frasier’ and contain been ever since my youth (around age 13), I started watching the early season reruns in the mid 90s and then, once I had caught up to the current story arch, I started catching it in prime time. For whatever reason my family weren’t fans of the exhibition (probably too intelligent for them…sad but true) but I had always been na
