Gay race comunism

Innovative and controversial in its day, Towards a Gay Communism is among other things a vivid document of a time when sexual liberation was a wing of the revolutionary struggle. An idiosyncratic synthesis of 1970s Italian radicalism, psychoanalysis, and Marxist feminism, Mieli’s provocation both shows his vintage and retains a critical urgency. The following is an excerpt from a new translation from Pluto Press.

As long as women reject or terror the sexual approach of another chick, as long as men are at pains to guarantee and defend the virginity of their own asshole, the reign of independence will not hold been attained; this is the certainty from which the homosexual perspective illuminates the future. —Mario Rossi

Ibelieve that this conclusion does not add anything unused to what has been discussed and maintained in the preceding pages. It is simply a concise synthesis of the main perspectives that arise from an analysis of the homosexual situation. Those who acquire followed me to this point, therefore, will find in these last pages a kind of recapitulation of what they should by now have understood. For those who instead have started by casting an eye at the conclusi

Towards a gay communism

Towards a Gay Communism: Elements of a Homosexual Critique appeared brashly and unashamedly in 1977 as part of the essay collection Homosexuality and Liberation. Its writer, Mario Mieli, “came out” in a similarly brazen fashion some five years earlier, bursting into public view at the tender age of 19 as a founding member of Fronte Unitario Omosessuale Rivoluzionario Italiano  (the Italian Unified Homosexual Revolutionary Front, whose acronym, F.U.O.R.I!, is also the Italian for “come out”). Though homosexuality had been legal in Italy for almost a century at the time of publication, the post-war period saw repeated attempts by the country’s conservative Catholic lobby to criminalise gayness, and both book and storyteller were met with widespread common condemnation. The fact that Towards a Gay Communism survived such censure can be attributed to the bravery of Mieli and his European interlocutors. And also, now, to Pluto Press, who have this year published the first unabridged English translation of the book.

The text itself is an unprecedented fusion of gay theory and political economy, a time capsule of interdisciplinary reflection buri

When Communism was Queer

Cuba is considering a new family code that could allow marriage equality for the first period in the communist nation. In the last year, the Cuban health ministry unfurled an enormous rainbow flag to mark International Day Against Homophobia, and former president Raúl Castro declared that confronting homophobia remained one of the government’s chief goals.

To some Americans, these developments might seem to fly in the face of the country’s communist history. After all, Fidel Castro’s government interned gay people in camps in the 1960s and sent HIV-positive individuals to government sanitariums in the 1980s. As one columnist wrote of the American left in the San Diego Union-Tribune, “it is memorable that any [liberal] could look at the Castros’ history on race and sexuality and conclude they had shared values.”

It has been common for U.S. commentators to use gender non-conforming people to discredit socialism — a kind of pinkwashing in reverse. But doing so flattens the historical relationship between gay politics and communism. Centering only the homophobic elements in communis
