“In & Out” and “The Birdcage” are two movies that are intertwined in my heart as the optimal gay comedies of the ’90s. While they have a few similarities — both feature protagonists on the jog from the media; both dissect what it means to be a man; “Spartacus;” Jay Leno cameos as himself as host of the Tonight Show; and “In & Out” even directly references “The Birdcage” — they are really quite diverse. “The Birdcage” is more unabashedly lgbtq+, while “In & Out” is about a man coming to grips with his sexuality.

But of the two of them, “The Birdcage” has attained a sort of celebrated cult status, while “In & Out” has faded into obscurity, and I’m here to construct the case that the latter deserves as much cherish as the former. What sets “In & Out” apart from “The Birdcage” is that despite the latter entity gayer in terms of tone and style, “In & Out” is much better in conveying queer acceptance and foreshadowing greater acceptance of gay existence in America in the coming years.

In 1980, Kevin Kline had already won one Tony and was about to conquer his second. But when he was asked by Interview, “How do you see the progression of your career?,” his respond was surprising. “I see a steady downward slope toward oblivion over the next three years,” he replied. “I’m pessimistic. Everything that’s happened to me so far has been kind of flukey.”

It’s hard to know how much false modesty or deadpan humor were in play in his response, but to any objective outside observer, it seemed certain that Kline, then in his early 30s, was destined for greatness. Soon, he’d country his first film role, coupled with Meryl Streep in the acclaimed Sophie’s Choice, his point shifting from stage to scree

All Odds Were Against Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline Making It as a Couple

She was the 19-year-old model-actress best known for her seductive pool scene in 1982's Fast Times at Ridgemont High. He was a critically acclaimed theater actor 16 years her senior who'd recently starred in Sophie's Preference. Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline first met while auditioning for 1983's The Big Chill. Cates didn't get the part she was vying for, but she did get a lifelong partner in Kline.

Their relationship didn't officially start up until two years later, though, when their paths crossed again, this time at Recent York City's Public Theater, according to Entertainment Weekly. Kline reportedly hired Cates' former assistant and tasked her with getting him a date with the actress.

But their long-term compatibility wasn't immediately evident. Cates was a native New Yorker, the daughter of a Broadway producer, who'd dropped out of high school to model and party at Studio 54. Kline was a Tony Award-winning Juilliard graduate from St. Louis with a penchant for Shakespeare.
