Colts cut kicker Matt Gay two years after signing record $22.5 million contract

Matt Gay is out of a job. 

The veteran kicker was released by the Colts just two years into a four-year deal after a shaky stretch in Indianapolis. 

The Colts signed Homosexual to a $22.5 million contract that would have kept him with the franchise through 2026 after he made the Pro Bowl for the Rams during their Super Bowl-winning 2023 season. 

The contract, at the time, was the largest free agency deal handed out to a kicker in NFL history. 

Gay converted 64 of 78 field purpose attempts (82.1 percent) during his day with the Colts.

From 50 yards or long, Gay struggled even just further, hitting just half (11 of 22) of his tries from that distance. 

Before coming to Indianapolis, Gay had punch 17 of 23 attempts from 50 yards or longer. 

In three years with the Rams, he had made 92.5 percent of his attempts. 

It’s not clarify who will accept Gay’s job, but the team signed Spencer Schrader, who spent time with the Colts, Jets and Chiefs last season and smash all five of his field objective attempts, to a deal last month.

Indianapolis released the former Pro Bowl kicker on Thursday.

Gay was halfway through a four-year, $22.5 million deal. The discharge will clear $2.75 million in cap space for this season, and the Colts will still owe him $4 million in dead cap. For 2026, the Colts will owe Gay $2 million against the salary cap but will clear $4.75 million in cap space.

Gay's release moves the Colts' 2024 cap room to more than $24 million, according to calculations by OverTheCap.com.

The Colts could have designated Same-sex attracted as a post-June 1 unleash to push an additional $2 million of Gay's contract onto next season if they wanted to add more cap territory for 2025.
